What is Walt Disney World?

As a lifelong Disney fan and a mom who loves planning unforgettable family vacations, I’m often asked, “What exactly is Walt Disney World?” With so many people thinking of Walt Disney World as Mickey Mouse and roller coasters, they’re often surprised by the vastness and magic of the Walt Disney World Resort. Let’s take a journey through all that Walt Disney World offers and explore what makes it the ultimate vacation spot for families of all ages.

Just How Big is Walt Disney World?

When I say, “Walt Disney World,” many imagine a single theme park. But it’s much more than that. Walt Disney World Resort is an enormous vacation destination, covering nearly 40 square miles, it’s a small city! Located just outside Orlando, Florida, the resort is home to four major theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom), two water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon), an entertainment center (Disney Springs) and over 25 themed resorts.

The highlight of course, are the multiple theme parks, each with unique atmospheres, attractions and something for everyone.

  • Magic Kingdom: The crown jewel with its iconic Cinderella Castle, brings fairy tales to life through six themed lands. From the nostalgia of Main Street U.S.A. to the futuristic thrills of Tomorrowland, this is what everyone thinks of with Disney. This is ride central, I love all the characters, parades, fireworks and more for that classic theme park day,
  • EPCOT: My personal favorite combines innovation with international culture. Recently redesigned Future World showcases some of the best rides at Walt Disney World, including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track & Soarin’. The World Showcase features 11 countries, perfect for families who enjoy global experiences without leaving the country. Each pavilion offers authentic cuisine, architecture, and entertainment from its represented nation. Nothing beats exploring the massive, wonderfully themed pavilions.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Where movie magic comes alive with immersive experiences that transport you into your favorite films. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is a groundbreaking 14-acre land where you can pilot the Millennium Falcon or join the Resistance in an epic battle. Toy Story Land shrinks you down to toy size in Andy’s backyard, while Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway takes you on a zany adventure through a cartoon world. The park also features spectacular shows featuring  Indiana Jones and Frozen.
  • Animal Kingdom: This beautiful park has an unparalleled blend of thrilling attractions and wildlife encounters across seven unique areas. The signature experience here is the Kilimanjaro Safaris, where you’ll spot giraffes, elephants, and lions roaming freely across 110 acres of African savanna. Not to be missed rides here include Expedition Everest, the tallest Disney roller coaster, and Pandora’s Flight of Passage, a breathtaking, immersive flying experience. This truly shines at night when Pandora glows with bioluminescent wonder.

Beyond the Parks: Disney Springs, Recreation and Resort Experiences

While the theme parks are undeniably the heart of Walt Disney World, there’s so much more to explore beyond the rides and attractions. From outdoor adventures and shopping to fine dining and unforgettable entertainment, the Walt Disney World Resort offers activities that can fill your days without even setting foot in a park. Here’s a closer look at some of the experiences that go beyond the parks:

  • Dining at Disney Springs: With over 60 dining locations, there’s something for everyone, from gourmet fare to family-friendly bites. Families with younger kids will enjoy spots like T-Rex Café, where dining is a prehistoric adventure, while adults can try amazing options like Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ or Morimoto Asia.
  • Shopping Options: Disney Springs offers exclusive shopping experiences, including Disney-themed stores, luxury brands, and unique boutiques. The World of Disney is the largest Disney store in the world, perfect for souvenirs, while boutiques like Zara, Coach, and Lilly Pulitzer provide options for fashion lovers.
  • Live Entertainment: World class entertainment like Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life, a beautiful blend of acrobatics and Disney animation that’s perfect for an evening show. For a more casual night, enjoy live music at Disney’s Boardwalk, or numerous lounges across the Disney resorts.
  • Golf and Mini-Golf: Walt Disney World has three championship golf courses that are ideal for golfing families or anyone looking to spend a day on the greens. There’s also Fantasia Gardens and Winter Summerland, two mini-golf courses with whimsical Disney theming that families with young kids will love.
  • Water Parks: With Florida’s sunny weather, a day at a Disney water park is a great option. Blizzard Beach has a snowy ski-resort theme with thrilling slides, while Typhoon Lagoon offers a tropical paradise with a massive wave pool and lazy river. Both parks feature attractions for every comfort level, so kids, teens, and adults can enjoy the water together.
  • Boating and Fishing: For a peaceful day on the water, you can rent a boat at several resorts or even book a guided fishing excursion on Bay Lake. It’s a unique way to enjoy Disney’s natural surroundings and take a break from the excitement of the parks.

Having a Magical and Stress-Free Disney Vacation

Planning a Disney World trip can feel overwhelming with so much to see and do, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here are a few tips I give to families looking for a stress-free experience:

  • Stay on Property for Extra Magic: While there are many great hotels in Orlando, staying at a Disney resort comes with perks like early park entry, unique complimentary transportation to the parks, and that “never-leave-the-magic” feeling. Plus, resorts come in various themes and price ranges, from the luxurious Grand Floridian to the more affordable All Star resorts.
  • Book Dining and Attractions in Advance: Popular dining options, like Cinderella’s Royal Table often book up 60 days in advance. Meanwhile, learning & understanding Disney’s Lighting Lane system can save you hours of time waiting in lines, so deciding what’s best for your family is important.
  • Budget for Extras: From special souvenirs to unique experiences like the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, or an after-hours event, planning for a few extras can make your Disney vacation even more memorable. For families looking for VIP treatment, Disney also offers private tours that let you skip lines and get a behind-the-scenes look at the parks.
  • Check those counter service dining locations: Walt Disney World is more that just burgers & pizza. You’ll find wonderful choices at all the parks & resorts from slow cooked ribs to fresh sushi, so rest assured eating will be a highlight of the trip.
